Moi Kapsowar Girls High School, Elgeyo Marakwet County
We were honoured to be invited to attend the Charity and Conservation Half Marathon organised by Moi Kapsowar Girls High School on June 24, 2024. The event brought together students, staff, parents, and members of the wider community to promote environmental conservation and support education for students in need.
As restoration enthusiasts, we firmly believe in the power of sports to inspire environmental action and community participation. We have consistently used sporting events as an entry point for conservation education, awareness, and tree-growing initiatives. The half marathon at Kapsowar aligned perfectly with this approach—using a community-driven athletic event to rally support for local reforestation efforts and equitable education. The half marathon attracted over 500 participants, all united by a shared commitment to climate action and community development. The scenic route offered runners a chance to experience the natural beauty of Kapsowar, while also drawing attention to the environmental challenges facing the region.
In addition to the marathon, the day featured a tree planting exercise and environmental awareness sessions. More than 500 indigenous trees were planted within the school compound and surrounding areas. This practical initiative not only supports local reforestation goals but also enhances the learning environment for students by serving as a living laboratory for biodiversity education.
Educational workshops were also conducted, focusing on environmental conservation, climate change, and sustainable practices. These sessions engaged both students and community members, building awareness and inspiring action beyond the event itself.
Funds raised during the marathon will go towards scholarships and educational resources for academically strong students and those from low-income backgrounds. This support ensures that financial constraints do not hinder access to quality education.
We commend Moi Kapsowar Girls High School for organising a well-coordinated and impactful event. The half marathon demonstrated how schools can serve as strong pillars of environmental leadership and social inclusion within their communities.
